Reference Extract: Searches archived FAQs.

"Reference Extract is a targeted web search engine. It is built from the expertise of AskA services geared to the education audience. The Virtual Reference Desk team has identified high-quality archives of FAQ's and previously asked questions. These sites were then indexed, and the result is an easy to use, quality oriented search engine."

If you are answering questions on the entymology of naughty words, you can refer users to the oed and to some of our slang dictionaries in the opac using this link

Here's a transcript of how I tried to answer this question...

Mita: Hi! You are now chatting with a librarian. How can I help you?
Visitor: Hi I have an assignment to do today for intercultural communications.
Visitor: I have to find a culturally derogatory term and find histroy and journal articles on it
Mita: Ok - have you chosen a word yet?
Visitor: I found the word and where it came from through the dictionnary but cannot find any articles or an encyclopedia to get sources... The word is Spic or Spick ( person of Hispanic descent)
Mita: Ok - I have a couple of recommendations for you...
Mita: The first is the Oxford English Dictionary - a special dictionary that keeps track of the history of words as well as their meanings...
Mita: http://webvoy.uwindsor.ca:2048/login?url=http://dictionary.oed.com/
Visitor: ok great anything would be greatly appreciated
Mita: You can also drop by the library to check out some of our slang dictionaries that may also be useful:
Visitor: That's where I found the word..and the histroy
Mita: http://webvoy.uwindsor.ca/cgi-bin/Pwebrecon.cgi?Search_Arg=English+language+Slang+Dictionaries&SL=None&Search_Code=SUBJ_&CNT=50&BROWSE=1&HC=23&SID=1&DB=local
Mita: In order to find articles you may want to try a couple databases available from this site:
Mita: http://www.uwindsor.ca/units/leddy/2002.nsf/JournalDatabasesBySubjectHistory!OpenForm Mita: I would try WilsonWeb and maybe America: History and Life
Visitor: thank you any keywords that would help?
Mita: can you hold a moment. sorry I got an important call
Visitor: sure
Mita: sorry about that
Visitor: oh that's ok
Mita: The searching may be tricky - if you can hold on a moment, I'll try a couple things and get back to you...
Visitor: ok great because I am getting absolutely nothing
Mita: I'm still here - you're right - there's slim pickings... I'm going to try another database
Visitor: ok
Mita: Can you see if this link works:
Mita: http://webvoy.uwindsor.ca:2048/login?url=http://illumina.scholarsportal.info/ids70/results.php?SID=c6a0286e9b573f3fd7cbbe9bbe154eed
Mita: You should see 4 articles...
Visitor: yes it does
Visitor: thank you
Visitor: is there any encyclopedias I can find through the university library website
Mita: Try those - I tried searching with "spic" to no success so I tried "hispanic and slang" (which didn't work well) and (hispanic and racist) which was ok...
Mita: the Database is called Linguistics and Languages...
Mita: Its available from this link: http://www.uwindsor.ca/units/leddy/2002.nsf/JournalDatabasesBySubjectModernLanguages!OpenForm Mita: Other online dictionaries and encyclopedias can be found...
Mita: here: http://www.uwindsor.ca/units/leddy/2002.nsf/CollectionsReference!OpenForm#Encyc
Mita: I would try Encyclopedia Britannica and Oxford Reference
Visitor: thank you sooo much we were only given the assignment today and its due at 4:00p.m.
Mita: Wikipedia is listed but its not a library resource but an internet resource and she be trusted as such
Mita: Good luck!
Visitor: thank you
Mita: take care
Mita: Bye

Due to technical difficulties, we have temporarily changed the look and feel to the A to Z list of electronic journals until we can figure out how to make the old list work with the new SFX version. Hopefully those visiting the list won't panic too much.
