This article in wired magazine points to an innovative program, Learning 2.0 ,developed by North Carolina's Charlotte & Mecklenburg County public library.
'Recognizing that librarians need to know how to participate in the new media mix if libraries are to remain relevant, Blowers challenged her 550 staffers to become more web savvy. Using free web tools, she designed the program and gave staff members three months to do 23 things.'
Something like this could be a fun and empowering tool for academic librarians new to these free tools, as well as library assistants, circ staff, etc.

del.icio.us "is a social bookmarking website -- the primary use of del.icio.us is to store your bookmarks online, which allows you to access the same bookmarks from any computer and add bookmarks from anywhere, too."
One interesting benefit of this is to use social bookmarking as a research tool.
For example, even without logging in, we can try a search for, say, open access and find links to many relevant sites as well as to people who have tagged them and their other tags and interests.
Here's an example of a library's use of social bookmarking.

From Waxy, I read about using a grid system for web design (see the ppt slides!) from a most beautiful site called Subtraction. Now I see grids everywhere: Slate, The New York Times, The New Yorker (redesigned and very pretty).
For one, its made me rethink the central image on our home page. Practice is that large colourful ads go on the far left.

A quick way to check to see if all the links on your web page are in working order, is to open them all at once using the Linky Firefox extension. My only complaint is that it maxes out at 99 links.
