Some suggestions for students doing a history assignment on a particular date.

Globe & Mail and Toronto Star: search by date, can limit to news, entertainment, etc.
(Also CBCA and Canadian Newstand)
Britannica Online - and the other encyclopedias, quick search for year gives a rough bunch of stuff
Maybe even the CBC archives
But the motherlode is in the Reference books section:
