In the recent College and Research Libraries
January 2006, Vol. 67, No. 1
Kevin P. Mulcahy's 'Science Fiction Collections in ARL Academic Libraries' examines the place of SF in academic libraries. It's a fascinating study, and makes a good argument for the inclusion of multi-disciplinary works like SF (or say, graphic novels) in academic collections.
Tragically, the great Octavia Butler passed away recently. Her works represent the very best in SF's realized potential. Along with Samuel R. Delany, she was not only a fine African-American SF writer, but a fine writer-period.
