Academic Writing Drop-In Centre
This time of year we get lots of inquiries about citations. Naturally we can point students towards our Writing Help page and the Academic Writing Centre page. We can also invite them to visit the Drop-In Centre on the Main Floor of Leddy, Tuesday and Thursday mornings, 9:00-12:00.

NetLibrary
"Search your library’s IT eContent collection including user guides, technical dictionaries, certification materials and more in subjects such as software, programming, and the Internet." For example: Keyword: Microsoft, Excel, Access, Java, etc. bring lots of results.
There are many returns too for titles in biology, engineering, genetics, physics, sports, business (resumes, cover letters), etc. These titles do not appear in the catalogue.
If a title isn't available upstairs, you may find it here. E.g. The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark (eBook) by Shakespeare, William.
(And many 'Notes On' such as CliffsNotes On Shakespeare's Hamlet, which hopefully won't see much use in a University Library). You can also find many titles by major authors such as Conrad, Dickens, Austen, Blake, etc. which are, I suppose, in the public domain. Personally, I don't like to read this on-screen, but it could be a good back-up plan.

PEN Canada is an association of writers and supporters formed in 1926 to defend freedom of expression and raise awareness of that right. It is one of 140 centres of International PEN in 99 countries, and uses the power of the word to assist writers around the world persecuted or exiled for the expression of their thoughts.

Women and HipHop
Every once in a while a student will ask for help finding articles on this topic. There are good results in Grove Music Online, Project Muse, WilsonWeb, and Contemporary Women's Issues.
Also check out InterMedia Arts which I found through the useful Voices from the Gaps:
"As Hip Hop has become more of a force over the last three decades, students and academics have focused on all aspects of the culture. Below are some links including articles from college newspapers, course websites, thesis papers, and more."

Canadian novelist Joy Kogawa on the imminent destruction of her Vancouver childhood home (Globe&Mail 3/9/06)
"But if it goes down, it won't go down unseen. Death is a part of life. Murder is a part of life. You can murder buildings. You can murder history. But healing goes on forever. So if it goes down, the healing goes on forever."

EEBO
There has been lots of interest recently in the database EEBO (Early English Books Online).
It's a remarkable resource: "digital facsimile page images of virtually every work printed in England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales and British North America and works in English printed elsewhere from 1473-1700."
If a student wants the complete document, check its box then go to the Marked List. 'Download the Record' is the item's record, but 'Download Document Image sets in PDF format' will let them save all or part of it to their desktop, etc.
Sometimes there is only a record and not the document. The pdf will be coming but they put the record in first so researchers know what will be available. See FAQ. Actually, it would be great if those MARC records could one day show up in the catalogue.

You may have students asking about Turnitin.
"The University subscribes to Turnitin.com, plagiarism-detection software, which is available for professors to use in any of their courses, either for all papers submitted to a course, or on an "as-needed" basis."
Here is an example of an instructor's instructions to her class.
